Sinn Féin MLA Philip McGuigan is urging people to keep an eye on their elderly and vulnerable neighbours, as there are growing dangers of them being scammed by a group of individuals for their money.
His comments come after a number of reported incidents in the Dunloy and Loughgiel area when elderly residents were approached by a number of individuals and were incidentally pressurised to have often unnecessary work done around their property.
Mr. McGuigan said:
“I am aware of a few cases in the recent past where two men have approached eldery and vulnerable adults living alone and pressurissing them to hand over money in return for work that is promised to be carried out around the house and garden. In these cases the work is unnecessary and the people are still being asked to hand over large sums of money.
“I would encourage family, friends and neighbours to keep an eye out if they see strange vans and people at the homes of our elderly citizens. I would also make the point that we should be making sure relatives have a point of contact to call if this kind of situation arises to ensure their relatives aren’t conned out of their money.”
